Health Tip: Help Keep Your Teen Healthier

(HealthDay News) -- Adopting healthy patterns during the teen years may lead to a better quality of life as an adult, the American Academy of Family Physicians says.

The academy suggests teaching your teen about:

  • Physical Health - Exercise often, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, get enough sleep, keep up to date on vaccines, maintain proper oral health and protect skin by wearing sunscreen.
  • Mental Health - Recognize signs of mental illness, pay close attention to your moods and emotions, ask for help if you feel overwhelmed and avoid bullying.
  • Behavioral Health - Avoid substance abuse, drive safely, wear protective headgear during sports, avoid violence and practice safe sex.
