HON gains official ISO liaison status

Geneva, Switzerland – 15 June 2010 – The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) today granted Health on the Net Foundation (HON) the status Category A Liaison to the Health Informatics Technical Committee (ISO/TC 215). This status allows HON to contribute to the elaboration of Standards developed by the Health Informatics Technical Committee (ISO/TC 215), and particularly in the domain of Data structure, Semantic Content and Security.

The ISO's Health Informatics Technical Committee works towards the “standardization in the field of information for health, and Health Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to achieve compatibility and interoperability between independent systems. Also, to ensure compatibility of data for comparative statistical purposes (e.g. classifications), and to reduce duplication of effort and redundancies.”

“Having the Category A Liaison status is truly an indication of HON's commitment towards the standardization of quality health and medical information, especially in the Internet age where it is gathering reliable data poses a challenge,” HON Executive Director Célia Boyer said. “This status will enable HON to work hand-in-hand with ISO. This would also allow us to contribute further to empowering health information seekers to access websites committed to providing objective, trustworthy and reliable health information.”

“In addition to this activity at the International level, HON will continue to be very active in the education of the health information seekers and help them become more vigilant and critical,” she added.

Health on the Net is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization aimed at encouraging the dissemination of and access to quality and relevant health information for patients and medical professionals.
