I am Professor of orthodontics at the School of Dentistry at the University of Manchester, UK. I have been working as a clinical orthodontist and researcher for about 30 years. My research has been directed at the outcome of orthodontic treatment using randomised trial methodology and has been included in several systematic reviews. I hope that my research has contributed to changes and improvement in orthodontic practice. I have also been teaching postgraduate students both in the UK and the USA. I have given many keynotes lectures at international conferences and I was scientific Chair of the World Federation of Orthodontists Conference in London, UK in 2015. I have been awarded the Northcroft Memorial and Ballard Lectures of the British Orthodontic Society, the Dewel and Turpin awards and the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and Research Award by the American Association of Orthodontists.
In addition to being an orthodontist I have been heavily involved in leadership. I have been the Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Manchester, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester and the Chair of the UK General Dental Council. I am currently the Director of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre Clinical Trials Unit.

Balanced and referenced information.

Photobiomodulation has the potential to speed up tooth movement. However, we need to carry out further research to prove the value of this approach. It would be ideal if this could chart the course of treatment as a whole.
