Health Tip: Help Prevent Skin Cancer
How to protect your skin

(HealthDay News) -- To help reduce your risk of skin cancer, it's all about protecting yourself from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

The Skin Cancer Foundation advises:

  • Stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim, and sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to any exposed skin. If you'll be in the sun all day, choose a water-proof sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply every two hours; more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.
  • Don't allow infants younger than 6 months to be in the sun. It's not advised to use sunscreen on them.
  • Each month, inspect your skin. Each year, see a doctor for a skin check.
