Factors to consider when using a proton pump inhibitor

By Diana Kohnle

(HealthDay News) -- A proton pump inhibitor, a drug commonly taken for heartburn, may cause side effects.

The American Academy of Family Physicians lists these factors to consider before using a proton pump inhibitor (PPI):

  • If you're a postmenopausal woman, talk with your doctor because a PPI could increase your risk for bone fractures.
  • If you've been treated for a C. difficile infection, check with your doctor because PPIs may increase the risk of the infection returning.
  • If you have problems with your immune system or are elderly, check with your doctor because PPIs may increase the risk of pneumonia.
