This study concluded that nearly 50% of the 32 most popular web sites on CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) for cancer " offer information of extremely variable quality. Many endorse unproven therapies and some are outright dangerous". As an action plan, the study concludes that "cancer organisations and other impartial interest groups should investigate websites and create and administer a ‘seal of approval’, for safety and reliability, such as the HONcode".

Health Journal Web Health Groups Try to Set Standards By Laura Landro, Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal (U.S. & European editions), 03 November, 2000. "MOST MAJOR HEALTH sites now carry a banner promising to adhere to the principles of the HONcode that Health on the Net established in 1996. But it has been impossible for the organization to monitor the myriad new sites to ensure they really are meeting its standards. The effort is complicated by the fact that among the thousands of sites are not only powerful dot-coms but also small nonprofits and patient-sponsored sites and chat rooms."
