HON is pleased to announce that Consumer Informatics: Applications and Strategies for Cyber Health Care, co-edited by HON board member Marion Ball, and Rosemary Nelson, has been named 2004 Book of the Year Award winner by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society HiMSS website. The Award will be presented during the HIMSS Annual Conference (13-17 February in Dallas). Complete Article >

The Annals of Oncology published in May 2004 a study "Assessing websites on complementary and alternative medicine for cancer". This study concluded that nearly 50% of the 32 most popular web sites on CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) for cancer " offer information of extremely variable quality. Many endorse unproven therapies and some are outright dangerous". As an action plan, the study concludes that "cancer organisations and other impartial interest groups should investigate websites and create and administer a ‘seal of approval’, for safety and reliability, such as the HONcode".

Semergen Hoy, the Official revue of the "Sociedad Española de Medicina Rural y Generalista" has published within the number 4, April 2004, an article on the "HONcode: la ética de la información médica" presenting the Foundation and its activities.

HON has realized a Press Release relating the development done about a new tool for Trustworthy Health Information. This new HONcode Toolbar is the first of its kind, and allows web surfers to highlight and select text from a web page and search for HON-certified sites (nearly 4000) about more than 33'000 medical and health topics. This "HONcode status" feature lets the user check whether a site bearing the HONcode seal is really in compliance with the Code. The HONcode Toolbar was developed jointly with NetUnion, a software development firm in Lausanne, Switzerland within the European research project ACTIVEHEALTH.

Health Journal Web Health Groups Try to Set Standards By Laura Landro, Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal (U.S. & European editions), 03 November, 2000. "MOST MAJOR HEALTH sites now carry a banner promising to adhere to the principles of the HONcode that Health on the Net established in 1996. But it has been impossible for the organization to monitor the myriad new sites to ensure they really are meeting its standards. The effort is complicated by the fact that among the thousands of sites are not only powerful dot-coms but also small nonprofits and patient-sponsored sites and chat rooms."

Ethique et e-santé, eSantéActu, 07 November, 2000. "Health on the Net (www.hon.ch): A Switzerland-based website, Health on the Net is both a major international resource in its own right and a campaigner for high-quality medical and health information on the net. It has its own code of conduct and logo to which other websites can subscribe. Finding the HoN logo is a pretty good guarantee that the site is reliable - but its absence does not necessarily mean a site is poor. Healthfinder, for example, is HoN accredited, but NHS Direct hadn't bothered at the time of writing. Along with Omni and Discern it is one of a number of organisations attempting to kitemark health information. Omni's criteria for evaluating sites can be found at omni.ac.uk/agec/evalguid.html while Discern is at www.discern.org.uk." Full article.
