Hiroshima, Japan, 25 Nov, Health on the Net Foundation (HON) represented by Prof. Antoine Geissbuhler, president of the HON Foundation Council has been approved as a Corporate Member of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) during its General Assembly. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, HON is the primary non-profit, non-governmental organization advancing and putting forward the promotion and use of reliable medical information in the Internet. Accredited in 2002 to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, it has operational support from the Geneva Health Ministry, the National French Health Authority and the European Union. Its activities focus on providing sustainable solutions to two primary limitations with regards to online medical information: complicated access to such information, and the unreliability of these information. With this in mind, HON has been at the forefront of innovative ideas highlighting the intersection between health, the internet, and society. One of the foundation's major accomplishments is the development of the HONcode, which sets the standards for reliable online medical information. It has also developed a certification process for health and medical-related web sites, search engines for health information (HONcodeHUNT and WRAPIN) and, together with local foundations, established thematic websites providing reliable medical information: provisu.ch, santeromande.ch, and the SCAHT website. HON's approach is both local and international, reaching out to serve the greater community through paving the way for the proliferation and use of quality medical information through the World Wide Web. As an organization with an international outlook, HON is very much honored to be a part of the prestigious IMIA community.
