Plantain is an annual (but can also be perennial) weed of the genus Plantago .
Plantain is widely distributed and is often found in lawns. Plantain pollen
is very often a potent hay fever irritant. P. psyllium , commonly
known as fleawort, is cultivated in Spain and France for its sticky, mucilaginous
seed coats, which are then used as a laxative. This type of plantain is
not to be confused with the tropical plant, related to the banana, which
is cultivated for its starch-rich fruit and is also called plantain.
