Under United States law, a drug is any substance (other than a food or device) that is intended for use in the diagnosis,
cure or prevention of disease, or is intended to affect the structure or function of the body.

Generic
The generic name of a drug is the name of the active ingredient, as distinct from the name given to a
particular product (which contains the drug), by a manufacturer. A doctor may prescribe a medication by product
name or generic name.
