What is Khresmoi?

A multi-lingual, multi-modal search and access system for biomedical information and documents. The system will allow access to biomedical data:

• from many sources,
• analyzing and indexing multi-dimensional (2D, 3D, 4D) medical images,
• with improved search capabilities due to the integration of technologies to link the texts and images to facts in a knowledge base,
• in a multi-lingual environment,
• providing trustable results at a level of understandability adapted to the users.

KHRESMOI will combine multiple data sources and knowledge derived from various heterogeneous knowledge sources. This includes text sources such as online journals and books, and trusted websites; and image sources, including images from journals and images from Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) at radiology department.

HON is the leader of the workpackge (WP) "Medical Information for European Citizens and Medical Professionals". The goal of this WP is to bring together the complex medical literature (scientific and professional) and the general public heath content. This combination of content will be prepared based on user studies with general practitioners and the general public to allow for adapted user interfaces based on the knowledge of the person searching for health content. This WP will thus provide a smart gateway to the information richness of KHRESMOI using a large variety of data sources including text in several languages and also multimedia data such as images and videos that are increasingly used by professionals and the general public alike. The presentation of the information will be in the language of the person performing the search, and it will be adapted to their level of understanding. Furthermore an important effort will be put into giving access to medical information for disabled people. Instead of reconstructing the content from scratch, we will use the richness of information already available on the web. In this WP, we identify the needs of the users and specify the requirements of a system suited to this task. The requirements will be used by the technical work packages to guide the system development, ensuring that a system for use by the public and non-hospital general practitioners is built. A cycle of end-user evaluation of the system followed by requirements specification based on the results of the evaluation continuing throughout the project. The Society of Physicians in Vienna (GAW) will supply a large number of test persons for such a system that can use the KHRESMOI tools daily and supply feedback for their improvement.
